ferdiOS nearing alpha release
The haters said they couldn't do it. And they were correct. Honestly great call from the haters.
Three years and two abandoned prototypes later, ferdiOS is approaching alpha.
The difficult parts are solved
Currently, ferdiOS boots, but various subsystems are not implemented: modem (4G, SMS, calls), camera, bluetooth, accelerometer, lightmeter.
| Problem | Predicted difficulty | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Bringing up the display stack | Extreme | Solved |
| Modem, at all, in any form | Impossible | Impossible |
| Rendering client windows | Extreme | Solved |
| Suspend that actually resumes | Extreme | Ongoing |
| Tracking user activity | Trivial | Solved |
Sander Ferdinand, Benevolent Dictator for Life, comments:
To complete the remaining features, we’re going to need about 324 cups of coffee, 92 takeaway pizzas, and 5 additional Claude subscriptions.
Reduced working hours
Effective immediately, the team moves from 80 hours per week to 75. The team has been informed, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with several members expressing genuine gratitude for the additional time, in which they intend to sleep, see relatives, or remember what their apartments look like in daylight.
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Hours worked per week | 80 | 75 |
An unnamed employee comments:
As an unpaid intern without any equity, I feel grateful for being part of this pivotal moment. ferdiOS will be a highlight on my résumé, and a succesful career working 9-5 under fluorescent lights in an open-floor plan is now guaranteed.
Management wishes to stress that this is not about productivity. No productivity targets have changed. Only the amount of time available to fail to meet those productivity targets.
